Making Sustainability Standards Work for Small-scale Farmers. A Pre-UNCTAD XII Event
Arusha, United Republic of Tanzania. 7-9 April 2008

Organized by UNCTAD in partnership with UNEP, FAO, ITC, IISD, IFOAM, TOAM, BOKU, IIED, ISEAL and EPOPA. With the financial support of the Governments of Austria and Norway and DFID.
The meeting will aim to:
1) Identify the impact of the spread of sustainability standards on smallholder farmers in developing countries, particularly in Africa;
2) Map effective strategies to minimize the costs and maximize the benefits of this persistent and important global trend for smallholders; and
3) Identify real economic, social and environmental win-win-win opportunities and related supportive policies and supportive/flanking measures.
The Conference will provide a platform for dialogue between experts from the public and private sector in Africa as well as selected international resource persons. Moreover, as this is a pre-event to the main UNCTAD XII Conference (20-25 April 2008 in Accra, Ghana), key messages from the meeting will be transmitted to UNCTAD XII. This event is being organized by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in cooperation with the:
- United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP);
- Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nation (FAO);
