SYNPOSIS |
|
| |
The workshop, based on tri-partied representation
from each country (environment and trade/industry departments as well as
private sector), discussed practical avenues for implementing the concept
of "environmentally sound management of waste destined for recovery
operations" (ESM).
Participants decided to go ahead with a work programme on developing a template
of elements for the implementation of ESM. As a first step, the UNCTAD secretariat
was asked to prepare for the next workshop a study that compiles information
on the already implemented explicit or implicit ESM programmes of national
governments and company-level ESM systems. Lead recovery from used lead-acid
batteries would serve as example in this regard in the light of the wealth
of information that was available on this case and the support pledged by
the key lead recovery companies in the rapidly industrializing countries.
Participants emphasized that the workshop process could thus facilitate
the development of a new international environmental standard, the drafting
of which would be driven by rapidly industrializing (developing) countries. |
