Purpose of the meeting and expected outcome

  • The meeting will bring together government and business leaders from the field of ICT who will examine the different policy options for the development of e-commerce in the Asia-Pacific region and, based on best practices, identify key elements of national and regional e-strategies.

  • At the end of the meeting, a declaration will be adopted by government representatives from the Asia-Pacific region on “Electronic Commerce for Development”. The declaration will express the political will of governments to promote e-commerce as an instrument of economic development in the region.

  • The declaration will feed into the regional preparatory discussions of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS). As the WSIS will focus on a wide range of ICT-related themes, this will be an opportunity for Governments to make a practical, action-oriented contribution.

  • Similar high-level meetings will follow in other regions (Africa, Latin America).
