UNCTAD - TAB (Trade Analysis Branch)

Since its establishment in 1999, the Trade Analysis Branch has been carrying out policy-oriented analytical work aimed at improving the understanding of current and emerging issues in international trade of concern to developing countries.

The Research Section has published a number of analytical studies on issues in international trade, in its UNCTAD Policy Issues in International Trade and Commodities Study Series.

The Trade Information Section has continued the maintenance and upgrading of the TRAINS database and retrieval system.

The Branch has been engaged in the development of new analytical tools and databases, such as ATPSM, AMAD, and WITS.

The Branch also works with staff of the WTO and ITC to compute market access related Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).

Revealed Factor Intensity Indices at the Product Level

A forthcoming UNCTAD study, titled “Revealed Factor Intensity Indices at the Product Level” describes a data-intensive methodology to generate indices that indicate “revealed” factor intensity of traded goods, at the most disaggregated level of product classification (SITC 5-digit or HS 6-digit). The indices are constructed by calculating, for each good, a weighted average of the factor abundance of the countries that export this good, where the weights are variants of Balassa’s Revealed Comparative Advantage index.
