The Andean BioTrade Programme was announced at the WSSD (Johannesburg, September 2002) and is recognised as a type-II partnership of the WSSD.

Under the Andean BioTrade Programme, regional coordination meetings have been held contributing to the sharing of experiences, knowledge and visions among the Andean countries.

CAF is formulating a GEF project to support the Andean programme. A PDF-B is currently implemented with Andean countries (Ministries of Environment and National BioTrade Programmes).

UNCTAD has submitted a proposal to the United Nations Foundation to support the Secretariat of CAN to further define strategic intervention areas, in collaboration with the national environmental authorities and national BioTrade Programmes. UNCTAD may also be able to contribute to strategic areas identified in the Regional Programme through BTFP.
