The
Uganda Biotrade Programme was launched in 2005 with the
following objective: "to promote trade and
investment in biological resources in order to diversify the export
base, improve incomes, create employment opportunities, and enhance the
sustainable utilisation of the resource base." The programme is the
first national programme of the UNCTAD BioTrade Initiative to be
launched in Africa.
The Uganda Biotrade
Programme is coordinated by the Uganda Export Promotion Board where
a BioTrade Unit was created upon the launch of the program. Since its establishment, the Unit has steadily established strong
working relations with the Ministry of Tourism, Trade and Industry (as
a policy focal point), Uganda Integrated Programme (funded by Norway), the
International Trade Centre (ITC), as well as with technical agencies such
as the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) and Eco-Trust.
To date the Programme
focuses its efforts on the following sectors
- Natural ingredients for food, cosmetics and
pharmaceutics
- Ecotourism
- Wildlife
