The
art of native medicine has been practiced in Uganda for many
years using native medicinal plants. It is a source of income and
livelihood for the rural communities. The medicinal plants are mainly
collected from the wild. An assessment of this sector, carried out
by the National BioTrade Programme, reflects concerns at the sector,
rural communities and enterprise levels, which require for immediate and
long term strategic intervention for the sustainable supply of NICP
products from Uganda.
With
support from BTFP, the
BioTrade Programme in
Uganda is
promoting the value chains of Natural Ingredients for Cosmetics
and Pharmaceutics with the following objective:
To harness and develop the country’s
potential to produce, from native Ugandan biodiversity, natural
products for cosmetic and pharmaceutical use in national and
international markets.
