The
BioTrade National Programme in Colombia is
known as Biocomercio Sostenible and was
launched in 1999. Its
objective is "to create and foster
mechanisms that enhance the investment and trade of
biodiversity-based products and services that use sustainable criteria,
and complements and supports local and regional development efforts for
the progress of Colombia".
Biocomercio Sostenible is coordinated by the
Alexander von Humboldt Institute. Today the
Programme is partnering with many
international organisations including UNCTAD, the World
Bank, GEF, GTZ and WWF. It has established
an efficient and team-oriented network throughout
Colombia, especially in remote areas, through
which technical assistance is delivered to rural
communities and small and medium-sized enterprises.
The Colombia Programme was the
first national programme of the UNCTAD BioTrade Initiative. Today
Biocomercio Sostenible is actively involved
in the regional BioTrade programmes for the Andes, the Amazon,
and with support from the BTFP,
carries out a wide range of activities in order to strengthen specific
sectors, such as natural ingredients and exotic flowers.
To date, Biocomercio Sostenible
focuses its efforts on the following sectors:
BTFP is supporting the first two of these sectors.
